But, you can try:
rmmod rtl8187
modprobe r8187
Both are included in BT4 Final.

I'd check dmesg, the last few lines at least to see where the problem lies. If this is a WPA/WPA2 secured network, I'd try to use wpa_supplicant to give me a slightly more verbose error.
