    Default backtrack on usb stick

    Dear all,
This is my final try to seek help about backtrack. I have installed both maps BT3 and Boot on my usb stick. I have runned bootinst.bat in usb directory and got the message that my usb is bootable now. Somehow my laptop with XP on it will not start from this usb stick. I have searched the internet for months. I have found many possiblilities but none of them work out proper.

Please could you help me and tell me what to do?
I have used a 2 gig usb stick.
I talk about bt3, but i'll guess that the same procedure will be for bt4?

Even I have changed the boot order. First device is usb....

Thank you already for your kind help.

um, make sure you have extracted everything from the .iso just fine, and that everything was copied over to the usb just fine and that you are not missing anything

you have to edit the bootinst.bat

look for a "-maf" and change it to "-ma -f"

there are two places you will need to change this, change them both

    then run bootinst.bat

i had to do this to get bt4 to run correctly on my usb

    good luck

    this is fixed in BT4beta

Might check if you have to enable the feature of usb booting. Took me a min to figure out on one of my laptops turned out that in the bios i had to enable booting from a external drive. Don't know if that is your problem but it let mine boot off of usb (sony laptop was what i was using on)

If you are not confortable with command line and not sure about what you copied on the US, you may want to give a try to unetbootin. There are plenty of tutorial on how to use this tool but it is quite easy: start unetbootin from windows, point to your iso and select your usb and let it works. I tested with BT4 beta and prefinal and some other linux distro: works perfectly.

The (pre)final doesn't work for me with my usb stick. It freezes on boot, after something with a buffer and write through.
I copied Backtrack with unetbootin under Windows and Linux, it doesn't seem to work.
The Backtrack 4 Beta works fine with it.

Posts like this do not help us to help you.
If you want said help then try to be a bit more specific.
Try to post the exact message of the error.
Some hardware specs. would also be nice.
To be successful here you should read all of the following.

I'll try the tutorial tomorrow, and if it fails, the hardware specs.

There is no error btw, it just does nothing... for over 2 hours than i cancelled it.

Did you check the md5 of the original iso you downloaded? A bad download could be the cause of your problems so does the original boot up for you? Burn a DVD just to check, it might come in handy later for following one of the MANY tutorials out there.

    Which Tutorial did you use?

Get that original DVD burned and see if it hangs on all options, then post back.

Don't lose hope, i almost did but there's a wealth of help here if you help yourself first.
