Default Eee PC 701SD and packet capture

I'm wondering if anyone else on this forum uses an eee pc with the standard realtek card that comes with the machine, I'm planning on purchasing a 701SD. I wanted to know if I'm able to sniff and capture packets and operate in promiscuous mode , or do i need to switch to a card with an atheros chip set ? The exact card model is realtek rtl8187se , so any help would be great before I purchase it.

    Thanks.

As far as I know the eee pc uses an atheros chip not a realtek. It does not suport promiscuous mode, but does suport monitor mode. Meaning that you can sniff, and capture packets will connected to the network (i dont know about re-injecting them)

would it be better to buy say something like GIGABYTE-GN-WS50G--802.11-b/g-Atheros-AR5007-chipset- for 30 bucks , or is the wifi card sufficient enough for wifi cracking and communications.

This depends on which model of eeePC you are talking about. The 701SD comes with a Realtek chipset as the OP states.
