Yeah a wrt54g with all stockfirmware will crash all over the place under any heavy load.

As you should know thats not possible for every router so instead you shouls have him check the hardware compatibility list or something along those lines.
what we're you doing with ettercap when you lost the connection, maybe you ettercap was doing what it was supposed to but you instructed it to do the wrong thing?
