What makes you think that BT is detecting your wireless card, the output from airmon shows no interface/chipset or driver and iwconfig posts...

But from his output after running the airmon-ng command it reports the interface as eth1 which should be fine. More likely to be a chipset/driver combination I think....
What is the router you are attempting it on? What is the Reaver command you are using? Have you got anything else running whilst using Reaver, airodump etc.?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which has the Broadcom 4312 chip. If I boot from a BT5 (not r3) it loads the driver "b43" version 2.6.38 and it works perfectly.
Is there some guest additions you need to install for VirtualBox?
I run it in VMWare and if I resize the VM window, BT5 automatically resizes to fit the window.

It does look like it, and it has the Realtek RTL8187L chipset according to the website.
Where ever you have saved that tar file and run the 'tar' command you should find the extracted files in the same directory. So for example your file is saved in the /tmp/ directory, after extracting...
You can't change directory into an archive file. You need to run the command
tar -zxvf wireless-regdb_2009.11.25-1.tar.gz
This should extract the files into the directory you're are in,...
