So wehnever I tried opening the wicd and it didn't show up I forgot to start the deamon (init.d) for it.

As far as I understand your question there are two options,

1. your uni has a proxy in the Network to which you connect, this has nothing to do with connecting to the wireless network, only if...

The things you are describing above are for wired interfaces, it's a little different when it comes to wireless.

If you don't see any wireless interfaces with iwconfig...

This also totally works when you encounter compiling-problems in backtrack4 pre-final with the 2.6.29.4 Kernel!

Have you tried using the same usb-stick on a different laptop/computer?

If it works there, you know it's your laptop that's faulty..

(might need a BIOS upgrade if it is an old laptop)

What size is your usb-stick?

When I installed backtrack on usb (without persistant changes) I only had one partition.. Maybe that's your problem, backtrack probably wants to start from one...
