I've downloaded BackTrack 5 R3 the other day and had been trying all day long to make my Alfa AWUS036NH (RT3070 chipset) to work, or at least to be detected.

The stock 5dbi omni antenna Alfa AWUS360h is coming is much better than the 9 dbi, which imho is crap. Google it to convince yourself!

Is it possible to crack a wep key from packets captured just from listening of a wireless AP with airodump or is it necessary for a client to authenticate successfully?

I know how to patch drivers prior to compiling them. I'd like to know if it's possible to patch the already installed drivers. A yes or a no will do.
