If you run
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager start
in a terminal then Network Manager will see everything. Network Manager (or networking) is turned off by default.

If you installed XP--> Kubuntu --> Backtrack, then you installed the LILO boot loader over grub.
If you install XP/Vista --> Backtrack --> (K)ubuntu, then you install the grub boot loader last....
