ifconfig wlan0 down
airmon-ng start wlan0
airodump-ng wlan0

Did you check the Power Manager to make sure that under the "When Laptop Lid Closed" it isn't at the default setting of "Do Nothing"? Sometimes the obvious gets overlooked, "or so I hear".
