    Boot in recovery mode or from livecd/usb, chroot in your backtrack installation and add a user. Or just reinstall from fresh. It would be easier.

    This is a common problem for usb 3.0. Most BIOS/UEFIs don't have proper drivers. Just plug it into a 2.0 port

    Boot on the USB/LiveCD and chroot in your Backtrack install, and run update-grub or grub-install(if first fails, try the second)
    This way you will install grub in your MBR and if that was the issue...

    I don't think it's a problem. I just installed it on 16,7GB drive, 16GB is the Volume Group and it shows 4.1GB free space before doing any updates.
    After apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade it...

    I had the same problem with a desktop motherboard. It was a Gigabyte one.
    The problem for me was, that the bios on the board used a proprietary driver for removable devices that only booted NTFS...

    I just tested it using a VM.

    1. backup your data
    2. boot backtrack5
    3. install gparted

    apt-get install gparted
    4. in gparted, click on your /dev/sda4 partition(the extended partition)
    5....

    I don't know if it's possible, but in theory you should shrink the front from the extended partition.
    After that you should extend your bt5 partition.

    If you look at the source you see it using fork() and pthead() functions. I didn't try to see what it does with those functions, I just grep'ed them.
    But I didn't found any muxes or semaphores....
