    rmmod rtl8187
    rmmod mac80211
    modprobe r8187

    seems to have resolved the issue for me. I was pretty sad...

    I use an AWUSH036H as well, and noticed this happen to me in the few minutes I spent in the new R1. I think issuing ifconfig wlan0 down and then ifconfig wlan0 up fixed it for me.
