Almost only very new Notebooks and computers can boot from usb. the system to boot from usb was first introduced 2002 i think... any older bios surely wont work if you dont update it

its as easy as Ubuntu

I would suggest you to use a tool named Wubi (only type wubi in somewhere...)
that thing installs you the very usefriendly Ubuntu under Windows (its a exe) without a need to format the disk drives...
