I posted a reply with the procedure I used but for some reason it won't come up.
chmod +x ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run
./ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run
Follow the installer wizard.
reboot
when it comes back up run the following from the console:

This does work but logging out and back in again, the problem will return. Also can't launch apps after login (Ex. Konsole)
