Open wicd click on properties of the network you are trying to connect to , tick static IPs then just put a unused ip address in put the netmask in and default gateway address in and not...
I am guessing you are using DHCP , have you tried to assign yourself a IP address manually . give some more info on what you have tried and some one might be able to help you out more .
Try closing down the programs that are opening up at startup , then click on logout NOT poweroff ,, then type in startx , it will restart without them opening up ,, then poweroff as normal ...
You might find the best thing to do is read up a little .. like 8 posts above mine , i am sure Archangel-Amael left a big clue .
Like " bosozoku said that's the way to go . he's also given you the command /etc/init.d/wicd start
or for wired connection /etc/init.d/networking start .Have you tried all the obvious stuff...
