I tried your How To on BT4 final, and of course i stumbled on a few glimpse (GRUB for instance), but it's very close and i guess it's certainly the most complete "How to" i have...
Thanks Steve baker, i also noted the move of the KDE folder from /usr to /opt but didn't knew where to look to correct the pointer :(.

I just tried again (update then upgrade) and same result for me as before = broken startx
During the upgrade i had plenty of message regarding dpkg complaining that he was not able to remove...
Install works great, just as described.
Now, i stupid question i'm asking myself is: Is there a way, from time to time to "merge" the changes in the "original ISO/partition" ?
