You should only try to crack your own ap. The problem can be that you're to far away from the AP. You can try to lower the rate so you have more chance to associate: iwconfig <interface> rate 1M

After the association you also have to generate ARP packages by fe. deauthing a client. You can find more about how to generate arp package on the aircrack-ng site (check the wiki)

If you run backtrack that much that the screen becomes annoying, why don't you install it on HDD then ?
