Confirmed on a Sony VPCEA24FM.

The summary:


fix-vesa
vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Press insert on your keyboard to use vim in edit mode.
scroll down to the screen section, subsection...

In my case this did not work.
My fix:


mv /etc/rc0.d/K50alsa-utils ~

this is to be sure this fix will work for you, if not you can always mv it back
