They may have just been overloaded at the time .. i didnt find the repos to be any slower then usual .. I was getting about my max speeds when downloading from them..

If you are just using terminal you can hit ALT + F2 to open a new tab then u can just hit ALT F1 to go back to your original tab. This is nice for using backtrack straight from terminal.
