I must admit I didn't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has already been said, but: why on earth are you building KDE manually and not getting it from the apt repository? Using aptitude...

I'm not sure you can, actually. Virtualbox will find your wireless card and the virtual machine will then see it as an ethernet connection. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does anyone know what kind of license BT4 has?

I know that BT4 is based on Ubuntu, and Ubuntu is GPL, so would it be fair to assume that BT4 is also GPL?

Do you have a file /etc/modprobe.conf (might also be called discover-modprobe.conf)? If so, you could try to put options iwl4965 swcrypto=1 (or whatever fits your laptop) in there.

Have you turned on usb-support in vmware? (if such a thing exists, that is. I know it does in virtualbox. Worth a shot)

Try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to generate a xorg.conf, then edit the file and put vesa as the driver under Section "Device", now try to start X again.

There is a package in the repository named firmare-iwlwifi. That package and some help from google should be of some help. I don't think you need to compile a kernel on your own to get it working,...

I'd say that alien is your best bet, and it's easy to install using apt-get/aptitude.
