I got a Acer Aspire 4820TG and I had the same problem.
I removed the vga=7xx entry and wrote vesa instead, and startx worked properly.
I got the same problem and i think it's a problem caused by dual-gpus.

cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe /etc/X11/xorg.conf
You wont have 3d acceleration but a working Desktop.
