if your laptop has a switch for the wireless card, make sure it is switch to the "on" position. OR Some laptops (like mine) have a button instead of a switch. then run:
ifconfig wlan0 up
When you get the screen that says
Boot:
just hit enter and it'll bring up the screen that lets you pick which mode you wanna run.
Do you have the kernel headers installed? Compat-wireless won't compile without it.
If you don't have them installed you need to install these 2 packages:
linux-headers (1.1-bt3)...
wget http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-ipw2x00_0.30_all.deb
dpkg --install firmware-ipw2x00_0.30_all.deb
make sure you uninstalled compat-wireless.
run:
airmon-ng
lsusb
lsmod
and see if it shows up. If it doesn't try modprobe ar9170usb and/or unplugging your adapter and plugging it back in.
You don't need injection patches. The problem is carl9170 sucks ass.
All you need to do is:
download ar9170.fw and put it in...
I was already connected to a db when i started up.

Make sure your using BackTrack4 R2. You shouldn't need to load any module it will do it automatically. try unplugging it and plugging it back in.

Well i checked it out and it seems to be the first 50 lines that aren't being read.
Even with a valid handshake, sometimes aircrack-ng won't crack WPA if the password is toward the beginning of your wordlist.
Check THIS out for more info on manually checking for a valid handshake.

If you are just using the ARP replay attack, try using the chop-chop and fragmentation attacks.
Use BackTrack 4 R2. With BT4 R2, your adapter just needs to be plugged in and it will work. No changes need.
I wouldn't install the carl9170 drivers. I tried carl9170 about 2 weeks ago and it...
Day 5? I hate to say it but you wasted your time.
- i'm 99.9% sure that ar9170 devices don't work with the madwifi drivers

easiest thing to do is just unplug the adapter and then plug it back in.
install.sh is always on the desktop unless you remove it from there. What wireless adapter are you using?
you can get the firmware HERE
i'm having the same problem. I also tried
ifconfig eth1 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx and get SIOCSIFHWADDR: To many open files in system.
It should work. Does it show up with iwconfig?
