Calculating the amount of permutations for a set of 36 characters, with a pass length of 8 characters,
P(36,8) = 36! / (36 - 8)! =
1,220,096,908,800...

I personally don't think it's your GPU, I haven't tried running gnome, but my little Acer Aspire One aoa150 with a slower processor and integrated graphics can handle KDE4 with full desktop effects...
