I am using alpha without issues as well. However - I am using VMPlayer (latest build) - Might be worth your time to down VmPlayer (Free) and see if this helps.

Are you sure Java is install correctly on the victim machine. It sounds like Java is not installed correctly to me. This will create the loop you're seeing.

Ifconfig should show your alfa now - no need to disable your on board.

Oracle VM VirtualBox is good and free. However, you still need an OS iso... not aware of any free ones of thoses.
