I don't know if this will help or not. I read in another thread that if you run 'xconf' and get a black screen after 'startx', hit ctrl+alt+plus. After reboot try the 'fixvesa' command.

I have the same problem. Using buggs' quoted code, my intellinet card starts in monitor mode fine with airmon, but still the same problem with airodump. :(
