    Is it possible that the AP you are trying to connect to is unable to transmit far enough? Maybe the AP range is the limiting factor and not your side.

    Wouldn't you wanna use ssh tunneling to be as secure as possible?

    Just set up a ssh server somewhere, then port forward with SOCKS on whichever programs have proxy support (firefox, pidgin, etc)....
