As the Db gets higher, the range is further but the focus is narrower ( you have to point the antenna more in the direction of the wifi signal )
I use to have a 7db worked good.

are you running it in a virtual machine? if so internal cards wont work, use a usb card
internal wifi adapters do not work in a virtual machine... if you are running a virtual machine you are limited to usb adapters.
