That is quiet interesting..You say it shifted about 3", but still it does not show it in lspci....Try again , but now without modeset = 1, just i915....

I cant deduce exactly from what you wrote above, therefore I must say: you must make sure that when you issue "modprobe i915 modeset=1" command, you are completely in text mode (aka command line mode). This means, you call modeprobe cmd BEFORE you issue the startx command!
Even if your screen gets shifted, try to do "startx" blindfold and see if the resolution gets fixed.

This definetly means that your graphic card is NOT using the i915 kernel driver.
Re: Intel integrated graphics are not working
Try to do this:
Open one terminal and type: tail -f /var/log/messages
Then, after opening the first one (do not minimize it or close it, leave it open so you can see what happens, just rezise it to have both terminal on sight), open a second terminal
and type: modeprobe -v i915 modeset=1
Please post output of both.
Luck.
Re: Intel integrated graphics are not working
I have had the same problem, and it took me 3 days to figure out how to fix this. I'm booting from usb. Anyway here are the links I used follow this and it might help.

trying this gives a black screen and i cant do anything., other than force shutdown i.e poweroff directly.

yeah i am not running the command from CLI before startx, although i did fear that if i run it from if it shifted again then will become permanent coz it happend when i had installed gnome of bt5. suppose if it gets shifted is there anyway i ll be able to revert it back ?? srry. but i just need a backup plan coz i had already reinstalled it 4 times due to hit and try to fix graphics issue.
Re: Intel integrated graphics are not working
As you were posting before, you are able to get all the way to terminal mode after booting..If loded the intel module with modprobe i915 modeset =1 , it shifted (image) 3".
Ok once you boot again, do not load the module with modprobe, do what I posted bebore, open 2 terminals:
terminal 1: Open it with ctl+alt+F1 You will see the prompt..
terminal 2: Open it with ctl+alt+F2 You will see the prompt..
To switch in between the 2, just the same thing: ctl+alt+F1 or F2 accordingly
In terminal 1, type: tail -f /var/log/messages
Switch to terminal 2 and load the module: modprobe -v i915 modeset=1
Now Switch back to terminal 1 and see what is going on with kernel when trying to load the i915...
Try it..You need to know why kernel refuses to load module...
Please try post output of both if possible..

I followed the steps as you said and here is the output:

note: i would also like to know one thing that how could i be sure that i915 is the correct module to be loaded in my laptop. Because although it had intel HD 4000 integrated graphics but its chipset is 7 series/C210 series family which is displayed in lshw.
Also, thanks for making efforts in solving my problem :)
