Not using a proxy and running apt-get update shows a bunch of repositories being checked then just after:
Get:11 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com lucid-updates/universe Packages [287kB]
99% [8 packages bzip2 0B]
and no progress beyond that.
What's up with this? How can I update?

Everything on my end works pretty good, I suggest you check your internet connectivity.
One question, have you checked the sources list? or repos?..I do not remember ever have seen those lnks in my last update...
I am having the same problem, I know this is a very very old thread, but was there ever a fix found, or an explanation as to why this is happening? I am running bt5r3 64 bit gnome in virtal machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same issue. Multiple pc's and with different versions of BT 5r3 (64 bit KDE and Gnome have the same issue). I've tried installing it as Main OS, dual booting, in a VM using virtualbox with same issue. I even drove over to a friends house and installed on a VM on one of his pc's but had same problem. One thing I've noticed is this is only effecting new installs. My friend is having no problems updating his BT.
I'm using a I7-3630K processor with 32 GB of ram, 1 x ATI Radeon HD 6990 video card, 60MB business grade internet connection. Not sure what else to add. Thanks for your help.
I've reported it to my PWB administrator at orders@backtrack.com as I'm losing valuable lab time. I cant' install any programs other than default since they come back with hash sum errors if I skill the apt-get update command.

Thanks for the feedback. Can someone post the correct entries for Backtrack 5 R3 sources list and repos? Also, since I'm a newbie here, please post the name of the file and location so I can find it and verify everything.
