Backtrack 5R3 - Wireless connect issue - ANY help appreciated
Hello,
I'm running Backtrack 5R3 via the VM image, the problem is I can't get the system to recognise my wireless card (built in HP Probook) I read that VM does not support this, so I purchased a USB WIFI card (branded digitazz) however backtrack still does not recognize the device.
I have searched the web and this forum, but cannot find a solution, please could anybody be off assistence, it's been driving me mad for days trying to get wireless to work.
If digitazz dongles are not supported, has anybody got suggestions on what is the best dongles and how to set them up, as I'm new to installing drivers via linux :(
Note, at one point I managed to get online via the bridged connection on the Windows 7 machine but this has now stopped working and I've even seen the "Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface. Check the wicd log for error messages" error.
WCID is showing no wireless networks and iwconfig states no wireless devices.
Thanks in advance,
Ryo.

We require more details, like what chipset does your card have ? Is it compatible with Linux ? Are there any drivers for it ?

Further info:
Firstly, I believe the wireless card is setup correctly, however no Wireless networks are shown in Wicd Network Manager.
Interface Chipset Driver
wlan0 Unknown rt2800usb - [phy0]
(monitor mode enabled on mon0)
If I type airodump-ng wlan0 the following is shown:
ioctl(SIOCSIWMODE) failed: Device or resource busy
ARP linktype is set to 1 (Ethernet) - expected ARPHRD_IEEE80211,
ARPHRD_IEEE80211_FULL or ARPHRD_IEEE80211_PRISM instead. Make
sure RFMON is enabled: run 'airmon-ng start wlan0 <#>'
Sysfs injection support was not found either.
However airodump-ng mon0 - will initiate a scan but does not find any wireless networks.
I've tried numerous tips from the internet and these forums including:
ifconfig wlan0 down
iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor
ifconfig wlan0 up
Still no networks found.
I've been working on this for days, so please, any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Have you set the wireless card to wlan0 in your WICD properties ?

Yes, I take it you mean the "Preferences" > "General Settings" "Wireless interface" field?
Thanks for the replies.

Alternatively if WICD fails you might want to setup the wireless connection manually. There are lots of links on Google that can help you with that.

Hi,
It's not so much no wireless in WICD, but appears to be no wireless at all, as no networks appear when attempting to scan via airodump - So I figured, maybe wireless is not working 100% in the environment.
If I get it manually working in WICD will that mean airodump will work?

That I do not know for sure since I do not have that wireless chipset, however I can recommend that you go to the aircrack forums and search in there, maybe someone had this issue before.

Ok please forgive me and I'd appreciate it if you didn't direct me to google as I couldn't find my answer, What command to I actually use to install drivers for wireless cards?
I downloaded and extracted the bz2 file but how to I install them?
Re: Backtrack 5R3 - Wireless connect issue - ANY help appreciated
I am not redirecting you to Google, I told you to go to the aircrack forum. Besides that there isn't much I can help you with since I do not have the same chipset as you.
An alternative would be to try this (even though it's for BT 5 R1) http://www.backtrack-linux.org/wiki/...vers#rt2800usb Also maybe try installing the correct compat-wireless drivers for the kernel R3 uses.
