How to make BT5 use a USB wifi adapter in virtual box?
Basically I'm running BT5 in virtual box and I have a USB wireless adapter I want to connect and use in it.
I have added it to the list of USB devices in the settings but when I plug it in... Nothing happens. I cannot search for wireless networks either. Anybody else every experience this problem?

Re: How to make BT5 use a USB wifi adapter in virtual box?
If you have as you said connected it to your virtual system and it is not still kicking around in your other OS, then you likely need to enable it. What do you see if you type "ifconfig" in terminal? Can you paste the contents for us? And why are you using a USB device, and not say NAT? Are you going to be pentesting wireless networks?

Re: How to make BT5 use a USB wifi adapter in virtual box?
need more info, like if you are if using vm or vmware, 32 or 64 bit distro, if you already install the guest-additions and extension packs if using vm?..You need the packs to be able to work with usb ports.
if using vm machine , did you add user to vxboxuser group? or is the user in vxboxuser?..Need to be in that group to see usb ports..
Luck.
Re: How to make BT5 use a USB wifi adapter in virtual box?
Thank you for the many replies.
I will try to provide as much info as I can think of.
Yes, I am trying to perform pentesting on wireless networks.
I have BT5R3 64bit running on Oracle Virtual Box: https://www.virtualbox.org/. I have installed guest and extensions, USB seems to work fine with the VM.
When I connect the USB adapter to the VM it does disconnect from windows like you say...
IFCONFIG says this:
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:60:f7:37
inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fe60:f737/64 Scope:Link

TX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:3888 (3.8 KB)
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

TX packets:77 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:5417 (5.4 KB) TX bytes:5417 (5.4 KB)
Is there anything else I missed?
Thank you again for helping :)
Re: How to make BT5 use a USB wifi adapter in virtual box?
That does not list a wireless USB dongle. So it looks like Backtrack is not seeing it. If wireless dongle was showing up you would see something like "wlan0".
Re: How to make BT5 use a USB wifi adapter in virtual box?
Did you started the network services?...Need to see wifi interfaces...And as Raskolnikov pointed out, your wifi iface is not being seen by Kernel (udev module)...
Try starting services: /etc/init.d/networking start
If it doesn't work, refer here please: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads#manual
Here you have a section about: linux, Windows, Unix..Go to Windows section, it's all there, from installation, USB ports, Guest Additions etc to Troubleshooting. Great guide..All you need....
Hope it helps.
Luck...

Basically, some USB devices may not working well under VirtualBox when it is enabled USB 2.0. Try to deselect USB 2.0 and enabled the USB feature.
You are required to install the Extension Pack for the host and Additional ISO for guest.
When you plug in the USB device, your host computer may caught the USB device. You are required to go to the VirtualBox menu --> Devices --> USB Devices to select the USB dongle.
Finally, make sure your wireless USB dongle is compatible with BackTrack 5 r3.
