1. Be sure your WiFi card is compatible with BT4and/ or there are supported drivers. Of course many would recommend getting an Atheros card.
2. Check out Up and Running Backtrack 4 - Offensive Security and the 'Setting Up Wireless' chapter
(enabling the card- /etc/init.d/wicd start then going to Wicd manager...etc...)
I would heavily advise browsing the forums and reading the howto sections, etc...
Make sure your card is turned on.
start the network--type /usr/bin/start-network
Figure out what card is in your machine, check the compatiblity list

Like " bosozoku said that's the way to go . he's also given you the command /etc/init.d/wicd start
or for wired connection /etc/init.d/networking start .Have you tried all the obvious stuff first (ie ) its not disabled , ifconfig , Airmon-ng etc . Give it a go and see how you get on .
Thanks I'll start reading on that guide and what not. What I don't get though is that ubuntu reads my card just fine why wouldn't back track?
^Most likely because it has not been enabled. See above and good luck!
