Resolution in Backtrack 5 R2 on my laptop
Hello
Firstly, sorry for my bad english.
I recently installed Backtrack 5 R2 GNOME 64bits in my hard disk and I have a problem with the screen resolution.
My laptop is an ASUS N53SN with a Nvidia graphic card (Nvidia Geforce GT 550M CUDA 2GB).
The problem is that Backtrack doesn't recognize my real screen resolution, 1920x1080 in Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS but I only have three option in BT. In System -> Preferences -> Monitors. I have 1280x1024(5:4), 1280x768(4:3) and 800x600(4:3) and I'm still using 1280x1024 (5:4) however my real resolution is 4:3, but my desktop with 1280x768 is so huge.
This is the lspci | grep VGA result:
Code:
root@bt:~# lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 0df6 (rev a1)
I would add the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, but it does not exists
I've tried to install the nvidia drivers for my card model. But when it creates a xorg.conf and I tap startx, it says
Code:
fatal error: no screens found.
So I tap rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then startx and nothing has changed.
I've tried to upgrade the nouveau driver, but failed because resolution doesn't change.
I've tried to add a new resolution with xrandr but give back an error.
I've looked for several xorg.conf in the web but some doesn't work and the others doesn't change anything or even downgrade the resolution. Just one upgrade my resolution a little. But it was 16:9 and awful. I modified it writting 1920x1080 in modes(Screen section), but nothing.
I've search the intel HD graphics driver and downloaded it but dont know how I can install it.
I've tried to solve the problem searching someone with a similar problem but have not any solution.
Here is the lspci output:
Code:
root@bt:~# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family DRAM Controller (rev 09)

Also I have search a solution for this problem in this forum, but have not found.
After almost each attempt I have formatted the partition and resintall Backtrack.
I hope you can help me in this forum. Thanks so much.

you should ask in the Ubuntu forums - you might get some help there as well
Re: Resolution in Backtrack 5 R2 on my laptop
i think better you checking the nVidia website that you can download latest driver for your machine in .deb package

I've already installed nVidia drivers but ressolution doesnt change. The xorg.conf file doesnt work properly because when I tap startx it says fatal error: no screens found. Then I delete xorg.conf, startx, open nvidia-settings and it says: you dont appear to be using a nvidia X configuration, try writting nvidia-xconfig as root. I do it, and what it does is to create the same xorg.conf.
I've written in Ubuntu forums but everyone tells me the same solution: install nvidia driver.
I have downloaded it from here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...53-driver.html
It is a .run file. I stop X server tapping Ctrl + Alt + F1, and then Ctrl + C. Then I write sh ./"name of the file".sh and it starts. Everything ok, but it failed creating the xorg.conf file.
Im gonna do it again so write here the xorg.config file that nvidia creates.
Re: Resolution in Backtrack 5 R2 on my laptop
Download nvidia driver and install it...Go to nVidia website and download driver for your model..Then you have to uninstall and blacklist nouveau driver. Then install nvidia driver downloaded, install it and reboot or restart gdm.
Luck.

I have asked in Ubuntu forums. They say that I have to install nvidia drivers.
I downloaded nvidia driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...53-driver.html
Then I followed these instruccions:
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...ad.php?t=46249
Who has almost the same graphic card than me (Me: nVidia Geforce GT 550M, He: nVidia Geforce GT 540M) and almost the same computer (Me ASUS N53SN, He: ASUS X53SV)
So I installed the driver and get the following message when I tried startx:
Code:
X.Org X Server 1.7.6
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.24-28-server x86_64 Ubuntu
[...]
Fatal server error:
no screens found
But the posts said:
It means that the automatic writing of xorg.conf (nvidia-xconfig command) during installation is not successful., but the driver has been installed correctly.
Ok, so I have the driver installed. What now?
I go to System->Preferences->Monitors and resolutions still giving me the same three options.
And here xrandr output is:
Code:
Screen 0: minimum 800x600, current 1280x1024, maximum 1280x1024
Thanks for your answers!

I think nvidia card is not "activated" in backtrack.
When I installed nvidia driver i changed in xorg.conf:
with
and it started X.
However the resolution is the same.
So I think i have to create an xorg.conf in order to configure X that contains my real resolution (1920x1080) but dont know how.
Thanks.
