in my country is forbidden too! and to me it's not! I made it a quick test for my curiosity! If I can tell you my impressions compared to 36h
I'm testing with and without compact driver (bt5r1vbox +32 +9)
-Dumping (wooowowhh) but the values ​​(distance-power) have a different "scale" which I think is not real (ex using reaver attack don't work) the same "network" with 36h I see them with another (distance -power) and reaver attack worked!!:p
-the injection pass the tests mon0. but if Shell 1 [airodumping] + shell 2[aireplaying] in my brief case did not work! [this is session-work]:)
-for "normal-connection" problem-I 've often I crash!
I understand a little! This is my little test! I'm glad to have tried and I thank you for sharing your knowledge!
After my test FOR ME the 36h (also at one watt [in my country-forbidden] is more real, stable, and gives me less headaches!

I didn't need to use compat-wireless. Have you seen any benefit from the newer driver?

But as there is always a but..here is my issue:
I am using this Chinese Made Blueway Model N9200 which has got exactly the same chip as in AWUS036NH.

This card worked out of the box in my BT5 R2 Gnome 64bit machine. It uses rt2800usb driver.

My kernel is: Linux bt 3.2.6 #1 SMP Fri Feb 17 10:34:20 EST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I just thought I will give compat-wireless a go: and this is what I have done.
I have downloaded the latest one "compat-wireless-3.5-rc3-1.tar.bz2"
and followed all the installation instruction from here:

After installing the compat-wireless I could not change the txpower of wlan1. It always remained at Tx-Power=0 dBm
I now have uninstalled compat-wireless and I am back to normal.

Ok here is the sequence of events:

1. My Blueway Model N9200 working fine with rt2800usb driver (wlan1)
2. Install compat-wireless-3.5-rc3-1
3. Can no longer change wlan1 Tx-Power and always set to Tx-Power=0 dBm
4. Followed all the instruction here: http://hacking-library.com/forum/vie...284&p=550#p550
5. wlan1 Tx-Power still set to 0 dBm
6. Uninstall compat-wireless-3.5-rc3-1
7. I now can change the wlan1 Tx-Power all the way up to 35 dBm

Can someone please tell me what benefit will I get by using compat-wireless, please?

Hello. I have this usb wifi radio, ID 148f:3070. Tx-Power is also zero for me. You should be aware that there are known bugs with the kernel driver, see http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB...php?f=5&t=6210
I hope there will be a fix soon.

You do realize that you're probably exceeding 1 watt and therefore subjecting your self to high levels of radiation in the 2.4 GHz spectrum right? Hint...2.4GHz is a MICROWAVE.....

Did not know that.. But for my normal operation I run it at 20dBm however when I am cracking WPS pin or Injection I run it 30dBm (because previously this is as high I could set it for country Bolivia). 30dBm is 1watt so 35dBm is 3.2 watt.

Question is if the card allows 35dBm then what is the problem here (other than the radiation), please?

Also when I do cracking I am not near the computer but thanks for the warning.. appreciate that.

Bugger quoting my own post.. anyway does anyone know if the issue with compat-wireless driver which sets Tx-Power to 0 dBm been resolved or not. I am having intermittent issues with standard out of the box rt2800usb driver.

A major bug was fixed yesterday in compat-wireless which impacted all Ralink 3070 devices, including those with device id 148f:3070. See both the thread entitled [rt2x00-users] rt2800usb stops at random here:

Ok I am only taking about that I cannot set the Tx-Power to anything other than '0' after installing compat-wireless-3.5-rc3-1. So I did a little dig up in those threads and found this particular link:

The first point is that the Tx-Power = 0 "bug" is largely cosmetic, transmit power is not zero in reality, the "bug" just reports it as zero because it does not know the true value. The threads you point to make the case that for certain wifi radio devices it is impossible for the device driver to know what the real power setting is because the device does not specify the calibrated value. Power can be varied in some cases, but that does not change the fact that the PC does not know what the radio power setting is. This problem is independent of operating system, the bug is a feature of certain wifi radios that use the ralink chipset.

I have one of these radios and I can communicate with an AP over 500m distant inside a building while Tx-Power is reported to be zero. Careful selection of your wifi radio will avoid this problem but you will probably pay more for it. Mine cost US$7 on ebay. You get what you pay for, I guess.

There are patches described in the threads you point to, from the Compat-Wireless maintainers. They do not appear to have been applied yet and will not in fact make much difference in any case. They best you expect, from my reading of the discussion, is a change that would make an intelligent guess at the Tx-Power or simply say Tx-Power is unknown.
