Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease i'm fed up to reinstall backtrack 5
For several times:
1) I install backtrack 5 on usb with universal usb installer
2) I do fix-splash and I delete files and cache.kcache plasma_the_volatile.kcache
2) I update the apt-get
3) I update metasploit
All is well until I poweroff and I reboot startx responds:

Try to install BT5 and skip step 2 perhaps ? "fix-splash" is not that important. And make sure MD5sum is correct.

Pretty sure the universal usb installer is going to install bt as a live cd, so your changes aren't going to stick. Just install like you normally would with a real hard drive and make sure after you tell it where to install you click the advanced button to tell it to install grub on the usb key.

Forgetting to click the advanced button has been the cause of a couple of frustrating hours.
Also if you are using intel graphics drivers you may have to alter the grub file.

I think this has nothing to do with fix-splash, or universal usb installer. Here is what I do:
1) Install backtrack (BT5-64-GNOME) using universal usb installer
2) apt-get update
3) apt-get dist-upgrade
everything works perfectly until restart.
Then, after I restart if I run startx the same thing happens as with apocalypto. And the only way I found to resolve this problem is reinstalling.
The checksum is correct. I don't run fix-splash, so I can't skip that step. If I don't upgrade, it works well, and has persistence. But I think it's reasonable to expect to be able to upgrade. Anyone else having the same problems, or is it just me and apocalypto?
