To start mysql, try the command:

service mysql start
The default username for mysql is root and the default password is toor. You should also have a look at the thread here: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...ne-server.html
because many of us have had problems mysql in BT5 and this fixes it!

Seems like there is something wrong with ruby, mysql and postgresql in BT5, no matter how much I try or follow directions it msf cannot seem to connect to anything at all.
It isnīt there at all, not even on a complete reinstall of BT GNOME 32bit
how is that?

i don't know where the issue lies but there is an issue none the less
i saw somewhere about some driver issues in the forums

no need to start mysql.
#msfgui
start the msfrpcd on the gui
check connection for password as it will be different when u run "armitage" from console
replace test with the password given by gui
exit the gui with out stopping the msfrpcd
#armitage
done !
