I had similar issues with Matriux-Krypton. So assuming Matriux is basically a copy of BT5 I went to the latest Virtual Box with extensions. On my OSX machine Linux running on the Virtual Box requires PATIENCE. My copy of BT5 presented me with problems like those described in these threads. I tried the "fixes", but REMEMBERED while doing so, to S L O W down. I installed BT5 on the VB with a 26GB VHD, and 2626MB RAM, tried a bunch of login with failures, and went outside for a coffee. Came back and BT5 corrected itself, took the startx/toor, and its been jamming since. Happy Hunting!

Any idea what I need to do so I can boot BT5 without having to enter the root/toor BS? I've done it in BT4 but don't recall what I did. (Security is not an issue as I will be running off USB once I get it working the way I want, am running in virtual machine for now.)
In my case what I did was add startx and gdm on rc.local...
