This has happened for a long long time, "from the root account obviously" ... its not a horrible problem in the least but is rather annoying.

I had the same problem I read somewhere it is a bug in KDE 3, can't remember where so can't provide a link, if I remember correctly I installed a newer version that worked ok but had another problem, so i switched to mplayer gotta have some tunes while testing
Just open VLC and drag&drop files and no error or just change the menu command to the exact location of vlc.
If you follow exactly what I said than the error won't occur.
@sickness This is very true and it is the way i have been doing it whenever i need to ... however there happens to be a way to compile it with the root patch so that this error doesn't happen.
I think it is compiled to run as root, if it wasn't it wouldn't run at all, I think the problem is the menu command is wrong
Ko kanda this is not multimedia system....
