KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
After playing a song in VL media player, whe I'm closing VLC media player, I'm getting the error message "KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'" although vlc is being closed.
I'm using Backtrack 4 R1.
Dragging a file to be played on to vlc is also not the solution of the above mentioned problem.
What has happened in KDEInit??
Re: KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
I am having the same problem, does anyone have a solution ?
Re: KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
it's a common bug on KDE 3.5 and KDE4 for vlc. U can bypass it by creating a shortcut on desktop and configure it, but kinda weird solution. I would advise u to hang on the default videoplayer.
Best Regards
Re: KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents for new users.
This error is produced by trying to open a file with just "vlc"... instead you need to use "/usr/local/bin/vlc" and this error will be fixed.
If you go to Settings>KDEComponents>File Associations then select "Audio" then "x-mp3" under "Application Preference Order" click "edit" if you messed it up already... go to the "Application" tab and change the "Command" to "/usr/local/bin/vlc"
Hope this works for you guys.
Re: KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
You could just open a vlc and than drag and drop whatever you want to play and it works.
Re: KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
just open vlc in terminal
root@bt:~#vlc
when you close it, the command never show up again
Re: KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
I can't download or install VLC. I did "apt-cache search vlc media player" as per Balding Parrot's FAQ, and all seems fine, but when I run "apt-get install vlc media player" I get;
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package media
I am running BT4r2 as a secondary partition in a dual boot setup along side Windows 7. I am also unable to view any videos from firefox, and the ones I download also will not open with any default software. I do not know what default program(s) I should select when prompted to in BT4r2.
Any suggestions are most welcomed.

Re: KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
I performed the commands as you've stated (w/o media player) and VLC installed correctly. Thank you for that. However, I did just browse the Wiki GAQ and there was no reference to VLC or a video player with a different name. As stated above, I tried to use the commands from another post, but that failed.
About opting for Ubuntu to become familiar with Linux, I've always been a hands on learner. The first time I crashed a computer from severe viral contaminants, I was forced to borrow another PC where I located DBAN, an OS off the pirate bay, and several other programs that I used to virtually rebuild my machine. This is the same method of approach that I came into the BackTrack arena. I view BackTrack as a tool, not a way of life. I just wish to use the tool to perform a given task. If my line of questions offend anyone, please ignore them, they are not meant to frustrate anyone. They are merely part of my doing due diligence. In the freedom community, we try to help one another by freely giving reference points on laws and cases to people in immediate need of them, not expect that one in immediate need go read the 60,000,000 laws currently on the books in the USA alone prior to asking a question about a matter.
(Note to moderator, I expect this post may get deleted for over explanation. If this be the case, please share this privately with sickness. I first attempted to contact him/her privately but was unable to locate that feature. Thank you for your time and consideration)

Re: KDEInit could not launch 'vlc'
Ok I'm going to say this again.
@freemyggle our Wiki is only for Backtrack and some common things like wireless drivers for example, not for media players and others. VLC works on Backtrack, it was tested by a lot of people. (I think we sorted this out.)
Regarding your approach I do not have anything against your methods but there are several things you must understand Backtrack requires advanced Linux skills as mentioned in the Wiki which means that we will not start answering basic Linux question.
