Cannot start wicd network manager. or enable my WLAN card....

Im having an issue getting my WLAN card working under BT4 pre final...

I cannot seem to start wicd network manger by using :

sudo /etc/init.d/wicd start (in the teminal)

Or by selecting it from Internet - wicd network manager !!

Nothing happens. no GUI nothing!

I have A BCM4312 card (I know its not the best).

but I have had it working before under BT4 beta.

I can get network with my LAN cable (for support purposes)

Can someone help me out with this please??

I ran sudo apt-get update to see if there where any updates that might fix my issue and i got these error messages :

not sure what these mean even after googling but im pretty sure it is why i cannot get WLAN card enabled...

and it states that my wlan card is unclaimed.
How can I fix this??-

do I rally need to instal a windows driver to get it working??

Okay I managed to get wicd network manger started by the icon for it on my desktop and launching it from there.

thsi strts wic network manager

but still no wlan card

I suggest editing your posts instead of making multiples in a row.

You need to start the wicd daemon (/etc/init.d/wicd) AND start the wicd GUI to get wicd to work. And then it will only work if your wireless card has its driver loaded.

If the driver hasn't been loaded the usual methods to get the card working under Linux will be either using ndiswrapper or applying firmware. Google for your cards name and "Linux" to get more details. If either of these steps are required its also likely that you wont be able to do some of the more interesting wireless stuff (e.g. monitor mode, injecting) with that particular card.

Also check the dmesg output for info related to your card.

The error above refers to a database server on your system and shouldn't impact on your wireless access. Your output above also says b43-fwcutter is already installed. Next step is to use it to install the appropriate firmware. Google can provide instructions.

Every thing I try with B43 FCutter brings up this error.

Not quite correct - those commands are used to download and install fwcutter from source. You should already have fwcutter installed via apt-get, did you notice the "b43-fwcutter is already the newest version" in the apt-get output? You don't need to install it again unless your version doesn't work, and the fact that your wireless isnt working at the moment doesnt tell you this. Have you worked out what fwcutter does yet?

Once fwcutter is present on your machine you need to get a copy of the right firmware for your card (there is more than one firmware available, you need the correct one) and then use fwcutter to install it. The right commands are on that page...

I understand that fwcutter installs the appropriate firmware for my wlan card.

Im using Bt4 as my entry project into learning about Pentesting and Debian based machines, So BT4 for seems perfect for this.

I have read the page you gave me a couple of times and also used Google to try to make sense of how and what I need to do to extract and install the correct firmware for my BCM4312 WLAN Card.

But I have to say im lost.
I am not sure what i need to do!

I am hoping you can get me started by actually giving me the correct commands needed to rectify my cards firmware issue.

I then will be able to study the commands carefully and teach myself how the commands work.

This too will teach me the basics of extraction and installation.

Can you help me out with this Lupin ???

Technically speaking, fwcutter is a utility that is used to extract the appropriate firmware from a Broadcom driver file. Installing the b43-fwcutter Debian package installs this utility, and is apparently meant to also download the firmware for you. I cant recall having good luck with the last part when I tried (the downloading of the firmware), so I did that manually.
