i am having the exact same problem. i am stumped where this thread ends. any help would be great appreciated as i picked up this adapter specifically to have it work with backtrack.
do i have to install a driver? or can i get it to work without having to do that?

Have you tried using the adapter with the live-cd version of backtrack ?
Then run through the commands as mentioned above ;
Just wondernig whether the VM is not been used properly..

I have the exact same issue. eth0 is ethernet, lo is loopback. I dont know what loopback is, but I think wi is what we are looking for. I know my card works. how do I test usb. I can't acess thumb drive either, but I don't know how to mount it yet of if it should auto mount. I have intell chipset

Also I installed on hd. 875 chipset Abit IC7G mobo. Would have edited last post but waiting for moderator to review post.

what version do you have?
because i've wusb54gc v.3 and i know i have to install the rt2870sta driver...
you're sure that the right driver is rt73?
