bt4 wireless trouble

i have tried connecting to my wireless router with two different wireless chips now, one of which was supported in bt3. the one supported in bt3 is a d-link wua-1340, the other is a broadcom built in to my laptop. both turn on (meaning light up) when i put "ifconfig wlan# up" into the shell but the NetworkManager still does not display any networks. However i noticed Kismet does display wireless networks, so i attempted to via the shell using the guide here:

unfortunately when i get to step 4 the shell tells me these cards do not support mac addresses...

any recommendations? thank you in advance

I don't remember ever seeing an error like this. Make sure you know EXACTLY what chipsets your cards have before continuing.

the internal chip is a broadcom using driver b43
i type "iwconfig wlan0 ap [mac:address]" and receive the output:
"Interface wlan0 doesn't support MAC addresses
wlan0 Interface doesn't support MAC addresses
Error for wireless request "Set AP address" (8B14) :
invalid argument "[mac:address]."

any suggestions?
